What is the best way to get rid of unwanted gr in courtyard?

I have an area of approx 6mtrs x 4.5mtrs that is all gr. I'm not a gardener and live alone, what would be the best way of getting rid of this mess and what would be the cheapest alternative for a maintenance free area that could be used for BBQ and entertaining?
