How do you identify if Carbon is produced?

I am studying for a science test and my notes say that if a complete combustion has taken place "no carbon or soot is produced" and if a incomplete combustion has taken place, "carbon and soot will produce." I can tell if soot is produced because it is black, but what about carbon?
