How can I not pay for a phone I don't use part of the year?

I have IDT. I am away from the phone's location for 6 months of the year but IDT makes me pay for keeping the telephone number and it's about $45.00 a month. Does anyone know of a phone service where I can suspend it temporarily without paying and keep my number?
